Throwback Thursday: Prometheus Re-Watch

For the first time since the midnight release, I watched Prometheus. I loved the film the first time I watched it; I found it thought provoking and an interesting concept of how life began, and even a realistic representation of what science could evolve into.

In case you couldn’t guess, SPOILERS.

The only issue I had was that some things about the Engineers made no sense to me. Having the knowledge that this is a prequel to the Alien franchise (which I have never seen, sorry…) many parts of the story don’t seem to correlate to Alien. In the comfort of my own bed, my boyfriend and I discussed the movie in the context of other people’s reviews and in the relation to Alien (my boyfriend loves them).

The Opening

I was told that people have different interpretations of opening scene. My first (and then second watch) made me think the opening was an Engineer left behind to create life. This was done by his body breaking down to his DNA, allowing for evolution to occur. Any other interpretation is lost on me. What else could even be occurring? He didn’t know what he was drinking? They didn’t plan on evolution or humanity? If you have a different idea, please explain it in a comment. It seems to me that reviews/viewers are overanalyzing the opening when it was fairly cut and dry.

Sexualization

If you are new to my blog, please note that I will almost always need to discuss the representation of women. In this movie, the women aren’t at all sexualized.

The relationship between Elizabeth and Holloway isn’t shown by sex, it’s shown through mutual respect, shy smiles, and hand holding. Then when they have sex it’s a plot point. It isn’t done out of a need for the audience to see a naked woman.

The women are also in space suits/outfits that are equal to the men’s. So often in science fiction, for example some of the outfits in the Mass Effect series, the women are in space suits/armor that has boob cupping pieces…which is in no way realistic. Female astronauts and females in the military do not have special women only uniforms, they have their size.

However, Elizabeth Shaw is naked in the film again. I bet some readers thought I’d forget that.  But if you see a woman giving herself a C-section and think it is sexual, then you need to see a doctor. Your mind is fucked up. It might be strange to some women that this was a plot point but I think it shows her strength as a woman in a womanly way. Too often feminists want women to basically be men. Shaw experiences something that men and even most women understand but cannot comprehend. As David says, she has an amazing survival instinct. Most women would not survive the physical pain let alone the emotional pain she is experiencing. She’s infertile and her lover just died after impregnating her with a creepy baby. That’s a lot to take in.

In conclusion, I would rate Prometheus as 4 out of 5, losing points for the slight confusion it causes.

Other things to note:
Weyland is Guy Pearce! WHAT!
What did David ask the Engineer? I need to know.
Also, so many problems would have been solved if everyone would just be nice to David. AND if they had given him more to do during the two years that everyone else just slept. Boredom and resentment is not good combination. In the words of my favorite Youtube celebrity Sassy Gay Friend, “Look at your life. Look at your choices.”

Throwback Thursday: Elizabethtown Rewatch and the Problem of MPDGs

“I think I’ve been asleep most of my life.”
-Claire Colburn, Elizabethtown

Spoiler Alert if it was 2005 and not 2013.

Elizabethtown starring Kirsten Dunst and Orlando Bloom premiered in 2005. I remember absolutely loving it; I cried when Susan Sarandon tap danced, and laughed over “peaking” on the phone. But this movie is often cited as being the movie began the term “Manic Pixie Dream Girl”. This Wikipedia page (which I’m attaching to allow those of you who don’t know the term already to get caught up), even states as such.
I’ve been coming to hate the term a little. Female characters I love have suddenly been called that, even though I don’t find them to fit the description. So although I originally agreed with Claire Colburn (Dunst) being deemed this term, I decided to rewatch Elizabethtown and decide how much I agree.

Well… I agree. I hate that I agree but I agree. But I’m not sure how much it bothers me that she is this way. If there was a sequel to Elizabethtown, I hope it would be about Claire and whatever makes her this way. And Drew would help her through it. But this Elizabethtown is about Drew Baylor’s (Bloom) father dying. As much as it is romance, I would have hated if we learned Claire’s life story and listened to her cry over mommy-issues, or how her boss is mean, or anything at all. She meets a cute guy, finds out his dad is dead, and wants to help. And she does. She gets him to grieve, which he needed to do.

Let me ask you this. When you first meet someone, do you lay everything out on the table? Or do you date them and get to know them first? Most people slowly allow for someone to discover their secrets, their flaws. OF COURSE, Claire is cute and dreamlike. She wants to impress him. AND HIS DAD DIED. I cannot stress my feelings about that enough. If I met someone I liked, at my parent’s funeral, barely knew them, and they cried to me about their life story, I would be say, “Seriously? My dad died. I can’t handle any else’s shit right now.” And they should get that or I would no longer like them.

In conclusion, Claire is a MPDG but I find her to be that way for a reason. In other words, if this movie was only a love story (and not about a man’s career falling apart and his dad dying at the same time), I would have hated it. And in other, other words, I bet if Elizabethtown was gender swapped, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

Throwback Thursday: Concerts

This is what she says gets her through it:
‘If I don’t let myself be happy now, then when?’
If not now, when?”
- Jimmy Eat World, "For Me This is Heaven"

If anyone noticed, I didn't post anything yesterday (Wednesday) and that is because I have been feeling a little down due to having a stomach bug and simply, from life sucking. But I just bought tickets to see The Postal Service, a band I have loved for years. So I realized I need to realize my privilege and be happy already.
Here are other concerts I have been to:

The National: March 2012
Jack's Mannequin: November 2011
The Rural Alberta Advantage: December 2009

The Rocket Summer: December 2009
Reel Big Fish: May 2009 (Yes, I did get my boob signed by the lead singer)
Death Cab for Cutie: August 2008

These are just the headliners I'm mentioning above; at those concerts I've also seen the openers. There are other bands I have seen as well without photo proof: Blink-182, Weezer, Ratatat, Bright Eyes, Jenny & Johnny, and probably more I'm too full of myself to remember.
But I've had a good life, and a lot of luck to be able to do the things I love. Silly me saw too many concerts in high school and saved NO money. I am glad I did though.

Random fact about me: first concert I ever went to was in the 4th grade to see Christina Aguilera.
